SHISEIDO CO., LTDLion CorporationTOYO INK CO., LTD.1We have developed a groundbreaking technology aimed at promoting both the reduction of plastic usage and the enhancement of recyclability in stand-up pouches for refill products. Usually, these pouches are composed of multi-layer films using adhesives to combine polyolefin sealant layers with films like polyester and polyamide. This combination provides essential container performance, including content protection and impact resistance, while also contributing to plastic usage reduction. However, the mixed-material structure of these laminates complicates high-quality material recycling and hinders resource recovery. To address this challenge, we embarked on creating a stand-up pouch that balances reduced plastic usage with improved recyclability by developing a method to facilitate the separation and recovery of single-material components. Our innovative process uses an alkaline aqueous solution to peel the laminated layers and employ density separation. During this process, the laminates are crushed to expose and subsequently dissolve the adhesive layers using alkaline treatment. This treatment weakens the bond between the outer film layers (nylon or PET) and the polyethylene sealant film, allowing them to separate. The denser outer film sinks, and the less dense polyethylene film floats, enabling the collection of high-purity polyethylene. Successfully, after numerous trials, we developed an advanced adhesive capable of withstanding exposure to contents, including surfactants, while ensuring it dissolves only upon contact with the alkaline solution post-crushing. Our meticulous exploration of various adhesive compositions led us to achieve this equilibrium. Consequently, we introduced these new stand-up pouches in Japan in November 2024, maintaining the same level of content protection and physical strength as traditional pouches while offering an efficient method for recovering high-purity polyethylene through alkaline treatment. In addition to reducing CO2 emissions, this packaging is designed to give consumers a tangible sense of contributing to the environment—something that has been difficult to perceive. To achieve this, our innovative “LiquiForm” technology which combines both bottle manufacturing and content filling in a single step, is incorporated to be visible on the exterior as part of the main container. By blending environmental awareness with the concepts of premium quality and sustainability, we deliver a fresh new value that resonates with our consumers.C02削減の実現に加えて、今回、これまで生活者が感じにくかった「環境への貢献実感」を感じられるように、「ボトル製造」と「中味液充填」をワンステップで実現する技術「LiquiForm」を主容器の一部として外側に出した仕様とした。 Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry AwardIPSA MEDirector-General for GX Promotion, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry AwardDevelopment of Flexible Packages Separable into Single Material by Delamination経済産業大臣賞『イプサME』経済産業省 脱炭素成長型経済構造移行推進審議官賞『易剥離接着剤を活用したリサイクル性を向上させたつめかえパウチの開発』Japan Star
